Soft-winged Flower beetles Edit

Arthropods (Arthropoda)---Insects (Insecta)----Beetles (Coleoptera)-----Polyphaga----Cleroidea----Soft-winged Flower beetles (Melyridae)

This family was previously known as Malachiidae. Soft-winged flower beetles are a group of colourful beetles mainly consisting of species covered in reds, greens and blacks. Look for them on tall flowers and grass. The most well-known species in Alberta is probably the Scarlet Malachite beetle which can be very common in the Spring and Summer. Some species can be very small, as much as 2mm, however most are around 5-7mm. Adults feed on small insects that visit flowers and occasionally pollen.
