G. polygoni is a species that got introduced from the Old World into southern Canada east of the Rockies and some of the northern U.S.A. The genus Gastrophysa has four species in North America, this species is the only non-native one.

The colour can be variable in shinyness and shades; the elytra can be anywhere from bright, metallic green to dark green with barely any lustre, as with the pronotum it can be anywhere from dark orange and orange to yellow. Look for these beetles in "Dry meadow" habitats and in small patches of grass. This species has been known as a pest on occasions.
