Beetles of this family are commonly referred to and are classified as Carpet beetles, Skin beetles and Hide/ Leather beetles. Species of this family generally feed on Dry animal material and fibres (such as wool, silk etc.), pollen, plant foliage, animal hair, dead insects and bits of feathers, sometimes they also feed on fibres from clothing. The most damage done is caused by larvae and adults mainly feed on pollen. Carpet beetles are probably the most well-known of all Dermestids, they hide in carpets and furry material and feed on parts as both adults and larvae, also pinned insects in collections will have to protected from carpet beetles, who may feed on their remains which causes brown bare areas with holes in which the adults have fed on. The 3 commonest beetle species in this family include the Varied carpet beetle (Antherus verbasci), the Black carpet beetle (A. megatoma) and the Larder or Bacon beetle (Dermestes lardarius).

HabitatEdit

Members of this family can be found mainly indoors, if your house is clean and such it can be very hard to find these. Otherwise on occasion larder and carpet beetles can found on the shady side of brick walls behind buildings.
