An Aphodiine Dung beetle (Mueller, 1776) EditArthropods (Arthropoda)----Insects (Insecta)----Beetles (Coleoptera)-----Polyphaga-----Scarabaeoidea-----Scarab beetles (Scarabaeidae)---Aphodiinae----Aphodiini----Aphodius---Chilothorax----A.C.distinctus
This is a fairly variable species, however most stick to the same basic pattern. This species seems to come out later than A. fimetarius does. After 12:00pm this species can be found in large numbers with other Aphodius sp. over large open spaces, such as wastelands in a spread out swarm. They appear singly on occasion. This can be caught out of the air with your hand if you judge it right, but it is easy to hit it with the palm of your hand above to knock it down to the ground (it plays dead too).
